Mani Ratnam Defends Use Of English Term ‘Sugar Baby’ In Thug Life!

Tamil people and cinephiles all around the world have been eagerly anticipating the release of actor Kamal Haasan’s gangster action movie titled Thug Life. He has co-written the script of the flick with director Mani Ratnam. Both the icons have teamed up for a project nearly after four decades following their last collaboration in Nayakan in 1987. Actor Silambarasan has played the second lead in the entertainer. Actress Trisha Krishnan will be seen in the female lead role in the project. Thug Life was shot in Chennai, Pondicherry, Kanchipuram, New Delhi, and Siberia. The entertainer is all set to hit theaters worldwide on 5th of June. Story teller Mani Ratnam along with his team has been flying across the country to aggressively promote the venture.

In a recent interview Bollywood auteur Anurag Kashyap had expressed that using English terms in Tamil songs did not make sense to him. When this was put as a question to director Mani Ratnam in a recent interview, he said, “I do not go in with a predetermined set of rules or restrict myself within a boundary. Whatever feels fit for the film, I go with it. Why unnecessarily confine your creative freedom?” On a funnier note, he commented, “Sometimes if you require a ‘Sugar Baby’, you go for it.” Talking further, he opined, “The notion that English lyrics are framed just to draw the attention of a young audience is totally false. Merely trying to be young and chic for the sake of it will not help sell you a film. Authenticity is what engages the audience regardless of age group. At the end, whatever you do needs to be in line with the narrative and trait of the characters in the story.”

Star cast of Thug Life also includes actors Abhirami, Sanya Malhotra, Ashok Selvan, Rishi Karthick, Joju George, Nassar, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Vadivukarasi, Nithya Shree, Tanikella Bharani, Vaiyapuri, Sanjana Krishnamoorthy, Pankaj Tripathi, Mahesh Manjrekar, Chinni Jayanth, Baburaj, Bagavathi Perumal, Ali Fazal, Rohit Saraf, Chetan, Srikanth Menon, and Rajshri Deshpande. Music composer A R Rahman has scored music for the project. Already eight numbers ‘Jinguchaa’, ‘Sugar Baby’, ‘Muththa Mazhai’, ‘Vinveli Nayaga’, ‘Anju Vanna Poove’, ‘O Maara’, ‘Engeyo’, and ‘Let’s Play’ are out from the album.

Cinematographer Ravi K Chandran has operated camera for the flick. Editor A Sreekar Prasad has been signed in to handle the editing division of the drama. Art director R Saravana Abiraman has erected sets for the venture. Stunt masters Anbu and Arivu have designed action blocks for the flick. Thug Life is backed by Kamal Haasan and R Mahendran under their banner house Raaj Kamal Films International in association with Mani Ratnam and Siva Ananth for the production house Madras Talkies along with Udhayanidhi Stalin under his home label Red Giant Movies.
