Trisha Krishnan – Biography

Trisha Krishnan, popularly known simply as Trisha, is one of South India’s most celebrated actresses and models. Born on 4 May 1983 in Madras (now Chennai), Tamil Nadu, into a Tamil Palakkad Iyer family, she has built a remarkable career spanning over two decades in Tamil, Telugu, and Malayalam cinema. Often referred to as the “Queen of South India”, she is consistently ranked among the highest-paid actresses in Indian cinema.

Early Life & Education

Trisha grew up in Chennai, though she spent part of her early childhood in New York, where her father was posted. An only child, she shared a close bond with her parents – her father Krishnan, who was a General Manager at a five-star hotel, and her mother Uma Krishnan. Her father passed away in October 2012, and her mother has since been a constant pillar of support, playing an active role in overseeing Trisha’s career.

She completed her schooling at Sacred Heart Matriculation School, Church Park, Chennai, and went on to pursue a Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) at Ethiraj College for Women, Chennai. A disciplined student, Trisha had initially aspired to become a criminal psychologist and was reluctant to enter acting before completing her degree. She also trained in ballet dancing for nearly seven years during her formative years.

Entry into the Spotlight

Trisha first entered the public eye when she won the Miss Salem beauty pageant in 1999, followed shortly by the Miss Chennai contest the same year. These wins opened doors to modelling and television commercials, and she soon caught the attention of filmmakers. She made her screen debut with a brief supporting role in the Tamil romantic drama Jodi (1999).

Rise to Stardom

Her first lead role came in Mounam Pesiyadhe (2002), which became a turning point in her career. She quickly established herself as a leading lady with back-to-back successes in Tamil cinema – Saamy (2003), Lesa Lesa (2003), Ghilli (2004), Aayutha Ezhuthu (2004), Thirupaachi (2005), Aaru (2005), Enakku 20 Unakku 18 (2003), and Unakkum Enakkum (2006) - cementing her place as one of the most sought-after actresses of her generation.

Simultaneously, she made a significant impact in Telugu cinema with films such as Varsham (2004), Nuvvostanante Nenoddantana (2005), Sainikudu (2006), and Aadavari Mataluku Ardhalu Verule (2007).

Her role in the magnum opus Ponniyin Selvan: I (2022) and Ponniyin Selvan: II (2023) – Mani Ratnam’s epic historical adaptation – brought her renewed visibility across a global Tamil audience.

Other notable films in her extensive filmography include Kireedam, Bheemaa, Kuruvi, Manmadan Ambu, Sarvam, Aranmanai 2, Nayaki, Hey Jude, Paramapadham Vilayattu, Raangi, Khatta Meetha, and Abhiyum Naanum.
